Repair or replace the auto glass?  How will I know?

Here is some information that will provide you with an idea.

  • Repair. When possible, repair is preferred solution. Repair is significantly cheaper and quicker to complete than replacement.  Although there are several methods of repair, most involve the use of adhesives.  These chemicals are applied to damaged areas with special tools.  They then bond to the sides of the damage and hold it together firmly.  This halts damage from spreading and eliminates replacement. Although often extremely effective, chemical adhesives do have some rather severe limitations.  They often are insufficient where the damage has gone permeated through the glass, meaning that chips and scratches are often repairable while cracks typically are not.  Adhesives cannot restore missing glass.  Adhesives may not be able to restore the integrity of auto glass which has been damaged in multiple locations.  Perhaps most importantly, adhesives cannot bring back the original clarity of the glass and therefore often cannot safely repair damage in the direct line-of-sight of the driver.
  • Replacement. When repair is not possible, full auto glass replacement is necessary.  Prior to installing the new windshield, all glass must be removed.  Replacement is more costly and time consuming than repair, but it can lead to higher levels of customer satisfaction and safety.  In some cases, customers may even have the choice of everal different replacement material options.  Replacement is most likely to be necessary as a result of several circumstances.  Damage which extends all the way through the glass, such as cracks, will probably make replacement necessary.  Any amount of missing glass means the whole windshield must be replaced.  Damage which would distort the driver’s vision even after repair must be replaced for safety reasons, even if it could physically be repaired.

How much does it cost to repair or replace a windshield?

Luckily, you’re in Florida.  Florida is one of the only states which have mandated that auto insurance providers cover the full costs of necessary windshield repairs and replacements.  According to Florida Statute 627.7288, the deductible must also be waived.  This statute was written to ensure the safety of Florida residents from accidents caused by drivers who can no longer see through their broken auto glass.  This means that you could end up paying absolutely nothing out-of-pocket.  Our members in and around Sanford are very familiar with the rules involving Florida Statute 627.7288 and can help you determine whether your vehicle will be eligible for service under it.
