How strict are the laws concerning windshield damage?

The State of California is very concerned about the safety of all drivers using California’s roadways. If your windshield is creating a dangerous situation for you and others around you, the state wants it repaired. It is illegal to drive a vehicle if the vehicle has window damage that impairs the vision of the driver.  Law enforcement will ticket drivers without question.

What are some of these damages?

  • Cracks – Even the smallest crack, if located in the right spot in the windshield, can impair the driver’s vision simply by drawing the eye of the driver to that spot while the car is in motion. Obviously, those cracks that run from one side of the window to the other need to be replaced.
  • Starbursts – This kind of damage occurs when the windshield is struck by an object. A impact spot is created and damage radiates out from that center spot. This is a serious impediment to safe driving, and they need to be corrected as soon as possible.
  • Chips – Sometimes a flying object can hit the windshield, and take only a small chip out of the glass. When looking at the chip, it does little to impair the driver’s vision. The problem occurs when that chip expands suddenly into a crack or a starburst. If that should happen while the car is in motion, it would create a dangerous situation. This kind of damage can be repaired by our trained technicians quickly and without great expense, if you bring it to 1-800-Windshield before more damage occurs.

Do any of these situations create any risks more than a visibility issue for the driver?

  • Cracks in the front or rear windows – Cracks in the front or rear window create a problem with the structural safety of your vehicle. A strong, uncompromised windshield or rear window is part of the safety design of today’s vehicles. These laminated pieces of glass serve to transfer energy from the impact received in an accident on to the frame of the vehicle. Also, in a roll-over accident, the window glass helps to support the roof, preventing the roof from collapsing.
  • Starbursts – This kind of damage greatly weakens the windshield because the damage is affecting the windshield in many different directions. Any type of impact can cause the damage to increase dramatically, thus further weakening the glass. In cases of side airbag deployment, the front windshield needs to be at full strength in order for side airbags to function properly.
  • Chips – These small, seemingly insignificant damages are risky because they can expand suddenly to encompass the entire window. So, in just a fraction of a second after a vibration or impact, the windshield can go from just a nick to having the entire windshield compromised with a crack that runs its full length or width.
