What typically causes windshield damage?

There are infinite potential causes of windshield damage. Anything can break auto glass, provided it hits with enough force. Among the more common causes include:

  • Windborne Debris
  • Automobile Accidents
  • Falling Objects
  • Vandalism

Because many of the causes of windshield damage can strike even when a vehicle is parked in a protected area, it is very difficult to prevent, no matter what precautions drivers take. Luckily, 1-800-Windshield is here to help, regardless of whether your auto glass was shattered in multi-car collision while driving to the Stewart International Airport or chipped by a falling branch at the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge.

Why does my auto glass need to be inspected and evaluated?

There are several different potential repair options available, some of which are significantly more expensive than others. While these more expensive repairs are sometimes necessary, they are often overkill. Similarly, sometimes less expensive repairs are just insufficient. Which method is chosen depends on a number of factors, including:

  • Type of Damage. Damage that goes all the way through the glass is considerably more severe and harder to repair. This means that chips and scratches are typically less serious than cracks and missing glass and less likely to require replacement.
  • Size of the Damage. The smaller the damage, the more likely it is to be repairable. For example, an inch long crack is more likely to be fixable than a six-inch long crack.
  • Extent of the Damage. The less extensive the damage, the more likely the windshield can be salvaged. For example, a single chip can often be fixed, but a dozen chips spaced across the windshield might not be.
  • Location of the Damage. All forms of auto glass damage limit the clarity of the glass. It’s simply harder to see through cracked glass than pristine glass. Even be most effective forms of repair will probably not restore the original clarity. This means that damage which lies outside the driver’s direct line-of-sight is safer to repair than damage which would impede vision.

How is auto glass repaired?

There are several different repair methods, but most of them involve the use of adhesive materials. These chemical compounds are applied with specially-designed tools which force them into the damaged glass. Once inside, the adhesives stick the sides of the damage together, just as they were before being broken. This prevents the spread of the damage, saving the windshield in the process. Adhesives rarely restore the clarity. They are also only capable of repairing comparatively small and minor damage. However, adhesives are normally very time and cost effective. Repairs can take as little as an hour to complete, and normally range in price from $30 to $200.

Why would I need to replace the glass?

Unfortunately, repair is not always an option. In some cases, adhesives are just not up to the challenge of severe damage. In other cases, repair is possible, but not safe because even the repaired damage would block the driver’s vision. Depending on the availability of parts and labor, replacement can several hours. Due to the differences in the cost of windshields and the number of man hours necessary for labor, replacement can cost anywhere from $200 to $1,500 and up.
