Do You Need A Windshield Repaired Or Replaced In Winston-Salem, North Carolina?

Windshield damage is a very common problem for drivers in Winston-Salem, causing anything from aesthetic annoyance to serious collisions.  Luckily, 1-800-Windshield can solve all of your auto glass related problems by providing a local, well-trained expert. Vehicles in Winston-Salem are always at risk of windshield damage.  Airborne objects over our roads, falling debris from trees and buildings, wildlife crossing the street, automobile collisions, and many other sources can all chip, crack, and scratch auto glass.  If your windshield has been damaged, it is extremely important that you repair it as quickly as possible.

Why Do I Need to Repair Windshield Damage?

Broken windshields can lead to a number of undesirable effects, including:

  • Financial Loss. Obviously, it will cost money to fix a broken windshield, but leaving a windshield unrepaired can cost significantly more in the long run. Small chips and cracks have a tendency to turn into bigger damage issues over time.  What would once have been a minor cost and easy repair may end up being an expensive and time consuming replacement.  Intact windshields prevent rain, snow, heat, cold, humidity, insects, and other natural forces from entering our vehicles.  Damaged windshields may not offer this same level of protection, allowing deleterious elements in.  Leaving a windshield unrepaired could cost you your sound system, seating material, and console covering.  Windshields can also cause accidents by making it difficult or impossible for drivers to clearly see the road in front of them.  These accidents may result in thousands of dollars in damages.
  • Injury. Windshields protect vehicle occupants from those same airborne objects that can cause auto glass damage.  An object striking with enough force to chip or crack auto glass is striking with more than enough power to cause injury, including bruises, lacerations, and fractures. And by driving with poor visibility, you increase the risk of an accident. Automobile collisions are one of the leading causes of injury and accidental death in the United States.

How is auto glass repaired?

There are several ways to repair auto glass, and which one is chosen depends on the nature and severity of the damage.  In most cases, one of two solutions will be chosen.  In some cases, adhesives will be applied with specialized tools.  These adhesives deal the damage and bind it together, hopefully keeping the damage from transforming or spreading.  In other cases, the entire auto glass must be removed and replaced.  Repair is normally cheaper and faster than full replacement but is not always possible.

Can I repair my windshield or do I need replacement?

That is impossible to say without inspecting your vehicle.  Every instance of auto glass damage is different, and the solution will vary according to the situation.  There are some general rules to follow, however.

  • Features of Repairable Windshields. Damage in the form of chips and scratches is more likely to be repairable than other types of windshield damage.  Damage which is limited to a small area of the windshield is also more likely to be fixable with adhesives.  Finally, damage which is outside of the drivers’ direct line-of-sight can usually be repaired without compromising a safe view of the road.
  • Features of Windshields that Must Be Replaced. Cracks often necessitate that a windshield be replaced, and missing glass always does.  Damage that covers a large area of the windshield is often impossible to repair as well.  Damage that is located directly in the driver’s line-of-sight that would otherwise be repairable sometimes may not be safe to repair because it would still leave the driver with a compromised view.
