In Baltimore, Maryland Call 1-800-Windshield For All of Your Auto Glass Repairs!

As we drive Baltimore’s busy streets and highways, we must keep in mind the importance of having the auto glass in our vehicles in good repair. Our windshields and side and rear windows are important safety features in our automobiles. They must be repaired or replaced when damaged, in order to maintain a safe environment for ourselves, our passengers and others on the road. If you have any auto glass damage, call 1-800-Windshield. We guarantee exceptional service, pricing and your satisfaction.

Much of our auto glass damage arises from falling debris from construction vehicles such as stones being kicked up into our windshields.  There are also hundreds of unexpected accidents such as falling branches, animal hits, even the stray baseball. This damage is unavoidable, but we do have to respond to it. Even small damages to our vehicle’s auto glass can have serious consequences.

How can a little damage to my windshield ever be a serious problem?

A little damage to your automobile’s glass units can be a major problem because of the way our cars are now designed to protect the occupants of the vehicle.

  • Airbags – Side airbags are greatly impacted by cracked and damaged windshields. When side airbags are deployed, they need to have a strong and stable windshield to open against in order to give protection to the passenger. If the windshield is cracked, the impact from the airbag could actually push the windshield out and away from the vehicle, exposing the passenger to greater risk.
  • Roof – The roof of your car is supported in great part by the windshield and the rear window of your vehicle. This is done by design. In order to get the structural support needed to protect your vehicle’s occupants in a rollover accident, the windows must be strong enough to help absorb the impact, and to help prevent the roof from being crushed inward. Any chip or crack in your auto glass diminished the strength of that unit, sometimes by as much as fifty per cent or more. Once again, putting you and your occupants at unnecessary risk.
  • Frontal Impacts – The windshield is also designed to help provide safety in the event of a front end collision. The windshield will help transfer the energy of the impact through the glass and to the structural framework of your vehicle, helping to dissipate that energy. Cracks and other damage to the windshield do not allow the windshield to perform this important task. Also, if the windshield is severely damaged to begin with, the impact from a collision could cause the windshield to shatter completely, allowing, under the right circumstances, the vehicle’s occupants to be thrown from the vehicle.

When do I know that my windshield needs to be repaired or replaced?

You should do visual inspections of your auto often. When you spot something that does not look right, bring your vehicle to our auto glass experts at 1-800-Windshield for a complete and thorough inspection. Here are some things to look for and consider.

  • Cracks – Cracks in any of the glass in your automobile can greatly reduce the strength of the glass. If left unattended, even the smallest cracks will expand and grow into larger problems. Dirt and sand working into a crack in your windshield will cause a crack to expand. When you hit  a bump in the roadway, the vibrations that pass up through your car could cause a crack to grow. Even washing your car on a hot day, or defrosting your windshield too quickly on a cold day can cause cracks to expand.
  • Chips – The chips in your windshield caused by small pebbles and other debris being lifted up from the highway and striking your windshield act much like cracks. They diminish the strength of the glass unit, and you never know when those small chips will develop into a crack, and  spread  rapidly across your windshield. If this occurs as you are driving, the distraction alone could lead to a serious incident.
  • Distorted View – Whenever you are driving, having a clear view of the road and your surroundings is of utmost importance. Any crack, spider web, or chip in your critical viewing area is putting you and your passengers at risk.
  • The Law – Maryland law requires a safety inspection whenever a vehicle changes ownership. Any irregularity in your vehicle’s auto glass will cause the vehicle to fail. Additionally, any law enforcement officer can issue a Safety Equipment Repair Order. This can be done if any damage to the glass in your auto obscures your vision, is more than a half inch in size in the critical viewing area, or in a non-critical viewing area, is more than two inches in size.
