Do You Need To Repair Your Windshield in Allentown, Pennsylvania?

Windshield damage is not just an inconvenience, but a real hazard. On any given day, our vehicles are exposed to several factors that could create windshield damage.  Everything from scattered gravel thrown up by large trucks to accidents caused by evading an animal could cause chips, cracks and shatters.   If you require auto glass repair or replacement in Allentown, 1-800-Windshield is the number to call.

Why do I need to repair a broken windshield?

Broken windshields are more serious than most people realize and can cause significant problems, including:

  • Further Windshield Damage. One of the biggest problems with windshield damage is its tendency to transform and spread.  Chips and scratches often cause cracks to form.  Once formed, cracks grow over time.  Eventually, the entire windshield can be destroyed.  Damage that could have initially been fixed for a minimal price can end up costing over $1,000.
  • Degradation of Vehicle Interiors. Interior components of a vehicle are not designed to withstand harsh natural elements. They are not supposed to be in direct contact with the exterior environment on a regular basis.  Windshield damage can let these harmful forces into a vehicle, wreaking havoc on the inside.  Rainwater can short out sound systems, sensors, and other electronic equipment.  Sunlight and heat can crack and warp console plastic.  Insects can chew away at seating materials.  Interior damage can run well into the thousands.
  • Accidental Collisions. One of the most important features of a windshield is its clarity.  Auto glass provides the necessary protection for a vehicle and its occupants while still allowing a full and clear view of the road.  Windshield damage can make it significantly more challenging, or even impossible, to see the way ahead.  Drivers who can’t see where they are going are much more likely to be involved in a collision with another vehicle, wildlife, or inanimate roadside objects.
  • Serious Injury. Far more serious than the vehicle damage that can be caused by broken windshields is the potential for serious bodily injury.  In addition to causing potentially life-threatening injuries from accidents, broken windshields also put vehicle occupants at risk from airborne roadside debris.  At any moment, there are untold thousands of objects above our roads, ranging from birds to small chunks of asphalt.  While normally these objects wouldn’t be a danger, when stuck at high speed they can cause significant injury.  Not only does debris itself cause injury, it can shatter damaged auto glass, sending shards into the occupants.

How is broken auto glass repaired?

There are a number of potential repairs, but most fall into one of two general categories

  • Repair with Adhesives. In many cases, a windshield can be salvaged without needing to replace it.  This is most commonly the case where the damage is in the form of chips or scratches rather than cracks or missing chunks of glass and where the damage is small in size.  Typically, adhesive chemicals are applied to the damaged area with specialty tools.  The chemicals bind the glass together, both sealing the vehicle from outside elements and halting the spread of the damage.  This process is normally much less expensive than replacement, as well as much quicker to complete.  However, repair is not always possible.
  • Windshield Replacement. For all the many benefits of adhesive chemicals, they do have some limitations.  For one thing, they cannot repair all forms of damage, in particular large cracks and missing pieces of glass.  Adhesives do not restore the original clarity of the glass, meaning that damage in the direct line-of-sight of the driver may not be fixable.  They also cannot repair severe or extensive damage.  If repair proves impossible, then total windshield replacement is the only option.  All pre-existing glass must be removed, and a new windshield must be installed.  Although more costly and time-intensive, replacement can lead to higher levels of satisfaction and safety than repair.
