Should I repair or replace my windshield?

That depends on a number of factors, including:

  • Cost. In almost all cases, repair will be significantly cheaper than replacement.  The cost of repair materials is must less than the cost of replacement glass, and the process takes less time to complete, which means lower labor costs as well.  Repair normally costs between $30 and $200, depending on the severity of the damage.  Replacement costs typically run between $200 and $1,500, depending on the make, model, and year of your vehicle.
  • Insurance. Every insurance policy is different, and this is especially true when it comes to windshield repair.  Some policies cover the full cost of necessary windshield repairs while others offer very little.  Certain policies are willing to pay more for repair than replacement and vice versa.  Your policy may dictate what is and what is not cost-effective for you.
  • Feasibility. Not all windshields can be repaired.  Some are simply too badly damaged to be saved.  For example, any windshield that is missing pieces of auto glass, no matter how small, needs to be replaced.  Similarly, cracks that go straight through the auto glass are typically not repairable.  Damage which would be repairable, if limited to a single area of the windshield, may no longer be if there are damaged areas throughout the auto glass.  There are a number of factors to consider before determining if a windshield is repairable, but they all boil down to how badly the damage impacts the integrity of the glass.
  • Safety. When you repair a windshield, you cannot restore the original clarity of the glass.  This means that there will always be some amount of reduced visibility.  When the damage is outside of the driver’s direct-line-of-vision, this is not necessarily a serious issue.  However, if the damage would constantly block the driver’s view of the road, the safety of all vehicle occupants, and indeed all of Greensburg, is compromised.  When this is the case, damage that would be technically possible to repair may still dictate auto glass replacement.
